Addons won’t farm for you, but the right few tell you what your loot is worth, how much you’re really making and where the next herb or ore node is. These are the ones I use every time I farm. They’re all free and kept up to date after patches.
Install them with CurseForge
The easiest way to install addons, and keep them updated, is the free CurseForge app. Install it, choose World of Warcraft, then search for each addon below and click Install. After a patch, open CurseForge and update them all in one go.
Time Is Money: your gold per hour, live
Time Is Money tracks your gold per hour while you farm. It starts timing on your first loot or gather, adds up what everything is worth, and splits it by source (coin, cloth, herbs, ore, skinning, fishing and drops). It has a small floating timer you can pause, and a clean, simple layout. It uses its own auction house scan, or Auctionator or TSM prices if you have them.
Its totals line up with the Submit a Run form: coin goes in Raw gold, cloth, herbs, ore, leather and fish go in Materials value, and gear goes in Equipment value (if you vendor it) or Transmog value (if you sell it on the auction house).

Auctionator: what your loot is worth
Auctionator adds auction house prices to item tooltips, so you can see at a glance what your loot is worth. Open the auction house now and then to scan it and keep its prices fresh. Time Is Money can use these prices too, so the two work well together.
GatherMate2: gathering routes that remember themselves
GatherMate2 remembers every herb, ore node and fishing pool you find and shows them on your map and minimap. After a few laps your route is mapped out, so gathering runs are quicker and easier to repeat.
Which ones do you actually need?
If you only install one, make it Time Is Money: it’s the one that turns “that felt like a good run” into a real gold per hour. Add Auctionator when you start selling on the auction house, and GatherMate2 if you farm herbs, ore or fish.
Do you need addons to submit a run?
No. You can time a run with the run timer at the bottom of every Gold Cloud page (or a stopwatch) and add up your loot by hand. Addons just make it quicker and more accurate. Our guide to recording a gold farming run walks through it step by step.
